Kolimvari, Chania, Crete

The most interesting sight in the area of Kolymbari Chania is the Monastery of Panagia Odegetria, known as the “Monastery of Gonia” and is located at the western end of the bay of Kolymbari. The Monastery of Gonia was built in the 9th century and has played an active role in Crete’s struggle for independence during the Ottoman occupation. Therefore, the monastery was destroyed several times by the Ottomans. Today, one can admire old manuscripts and books, dating back several centuries, in the Monastery’s library, although, unfortunately, a large part of these priceless writings were burned in the fire of 1867.

About 20 kilometers north of Kolymbari, on the Rhodope Peninsula, is the archaeological site of Diktynna, a sacred ancient site dedicated to the goddess Artemis Vritomartis, who was worshiped here since the 2nd century BC. until the Roman years. The road leading from Kolymbari to Diktynna is not paved, nor in good condition, so you will need a 4×4 car or a suitable bicycle.

In the summer, the municipality of Kolymbari in Crete organizes a series of festivals and activities. One of the biggest festivals of Chania takes place in the Gonia Monastery on the fifteenth of August.

In Kolymbari (Kolymbari) is the historical monastery of Gonia, which resembles a fortress, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary the Guide and has an important collection of precious icons.
